dogg has always been alright with me

a guy gets paid to do OUR dirty business, plowing roads and widening them enough so that miscellaneous things like, say, fire trucks, can get to our homes, and then some folks get offended because he does EXACTLY what he is paid to do?  that's bullshit.

not for nothing, but dogg (look at the video, will you, and turn off the sound while you're at it if you don't like profanity or a sense of humor) does an effective and efficient job of it--he doesn't damage vehicles, he doesn't gun the motor or aim the snow at any of the cars or driveways or other obstacles he encounters, and he doesn't do anything unprofessionally, unless you count taking a video so that we can all see what he sees from inside the truck.

want to know what i see?

i see car after car parked on the side of the road where they should not be, and driveway after driveway where the resident has put snow into the public roadway where it is a hazard to public safety.  OUR safety.  i took a cross-country ski trip around lowell that very same day that dogg cleared our roadways so professionally and responsibly, and want to know what i saw?  i saw one intersection COMPLETELY blocked from snow pushed into its center by private snowplows plowing private driveways.  i saw cars in streets where they should not have been, and i saw snow blown right into the street from private driveways via snowblowers too lazy to blow the snow into their own yards where it would more safely sit.  i saw nothing but the veering of city plow tracks around illegally parked cars that in no cases ever damaged any of those vehicles, even while the job they had to do clearing our streets for our own safety and convenience was made that much more difficult, time-consuming and ineffective by that selfishness.

so now dogg is fired, the combination of thin-skinned idiots, cowardly city administrators, and a business owner who got caught in the middle.  dogg felt compelled to apologize, and i'm sorry he did, but he did, and here's what i think.  i think the city has the wrong outrage here.  the outrage should be at selfish citizens who flout reasonable guidelines for public safety and then hang a plow driver for their selfishness.

that's wrong.

that's gutless.

that's impoverishing us all and leaving the real assholes (the street parkers and the into-the-street snowblowers and the premature driveway shovelers and the city administrators who value them more highly than the people who are getting up at 5am or working all night or what have you to see that we can all get our cars out and our emergency service providers in.

this is complete and total bullshit.

if i had a trucking company, i'd want to hire this guy.  i might tell him to be more discreet with his sense of humor, but i'd tell him to make sure he copied me the links so i could watch and enjoy on youtube just like any other sane and sensible human being would.

does it suck to have your car buried in a snowbank, or your driveway plowed in after you've shoveled it out?  sure it does.  which is why the rest of us don't park on the street during a snow emergency, and wait until the plows have done their work before doing ours.  (where are you going to go from a shoveled driveway when the street in front isn't plowed anyway?)

i hope dogg gets another job doing what he is obviously good at doing.  i hope dogg knows that most of us are on his side.  i hope dogg doesn't let this get him down, the way it's getting me down that he has to go through it.

because this world is crazy if he's the bad guy, and the assholes with the cars and the snow into the streets aren't being called on it.  because if they weren't being jerks, dogg would be ready to go for tonight's snow, too, and we'd all be the better off for both.

dogg, you da man.

Yes, but one shouldn't deride the customers.

Just saying.

I consider this more akin to folks not liking the way sausage is made. Don't look if you don't want to know. Me, I rather like having someone dedicated to getting up at 5am or working all night and doing the job right, regardless of the derision. Make fun of me all you want, Dogg--I love clean streets on a snowy morning. And, not for nothing, but he's pretty funny, too, and that ought to count for something as well.
